- Back to topWhat will the performance involve?
A standard show involves one to two sets of belly dance performance lasting around 15 minutes each - approx 4 - 5 songs - and showcases a range of styles from classical to contemporary.
Helena will bring her own belly dance music and perform in gorgeous couture costumes.
She will incorporate a variety of styles of belly dance in her performance and usually includes props such as veil and finger cymbals, or even the dramatic "Isis wings" or cane (used in the traditional "assaya" dance) if the space allows.
If appropriate, Helena may also get members of the audience up to dance - perfect for a photo opportunity and a great ice breaker. You can advise her in advance of likely candidates!
For a special event you can also select a bespoke performance, where Helena will tailor the show to your audience. This includes selecting music, styles and even costumes to create the perfect highlight - ideal for weddings.
For corporate events and other large events you can also select a troupe show, which involves a 20 minute show incorporating up to 4 dancers and showcasing a range of dance styles.-
- Back to topHow much will the performance cost?
Exact costs will depend on your event so please call Helena to discuss your requirements. However to give you an idea, here is an outline of the most popular packages along with approximate fee: Standard Price List
As you can see, costs compare very reasonably to more common forms of party entertainment (such as a band or DJ) - yet booking a belly dancer will really make your event one to remember!
When comparing quotes please remember that a skilled and experienced dancer will be happy to provide feedback from previous customers and other evidence of their calibre as a performer.
- Back to topWill the performance be suitable for children?
Yes, of course! Belly dance is sometimes mistakenly thought of as a dance of seduction in the West, but this is not an accurate perception. Learn more about belly dance.
In the Middle East it has always been traditional to have a belly dancer at weddings and family celebrations. Helena has performed at many school fetes, festivals and other family events.
Children usually like to dance and enjoy the chance to join in. Little girls in particular love to see the pretty costumes - Helena is often asked if she is really a princess!
- Back to topWill Helena bring her own music?
-
Yes, music will usually be provided on CD. The venue should provide a good quality sound system. This must be suitable for the venue - a portable CD player will not be loud enough to fill a ballroom!
The system must also be able to play recorded CDs (CD-R). If this is not possible, please let Helena know as soon as possible so an alternative format can be agreed. Laptop, iPod and memory stick are other options.
Alternatively, live music can add a real extra dimension to your evening - Helena may be able to arrange musicians or a drummer for your performance, please ask.
If you have arranged for musicians separately then Helena will ideally need a CD or list of songs they are likely to play in advance. If rehearsals are required with a band in advance then this will generally incur additional fees and travel expenses.
- Back to topWhat kind of music is used?
Helena has a wide selection of Middle Eastern music, ranging from classical to folk to Western-influenced pop, as well as modern fusion and dance beats ideal for club venues.
Helena specialises in Egyptian dance, which is reflected in the music - if you want a different style to be reflected then is usually possible but please specify in advance or, to incorporate a particular song, please select the bespoke option.
- Back to topWhat kind of costumes are used?
Costumes can range from beautiful, hand crafted costumes specially imported from Egypt and Turkey to traditional folk costumes.
Cabaret costumes are usually two piece, i.e. a bra-style top and separate skirt with the midriff bare. Dresses give an equally glamorous but more covered look.
Long dresses with flowing sleeves are a more traditional form of dress. This is especially suitable for folk styles, or for audiences who prefer a conservative look.
You can see a selection of Helena's costumes in the photo gallery.

For multiple dancers you can book Helena's professional troupe, Orientale belly dance troupe. This is particularly suited for festivals, concerts and larger venues/events. A show with Orient Expression consists of a dynamic and beautiful 20 minute performance showcasing a range of belly dance styles.
For charity and community events you can also book Helena's student troupe Harissa. A performance by Harissa generally consists of a fun sassy show, 10-15 minutes long, showcasing Middle Eastern folk and belly dance.
Performances involving more than one dancer should ideally be booked with plenty of notice to ensure availability.
